ABSTRACT

Purpose@#This systematic review aimed to investigate the effects of aromatherapy interventions on depression and anxiety in menopausal women. @*Methods@#This study adhered to PRISMA (preferred reporting items of systemic reviews and meta-analysis) guidelines. Relevant studies published between 1994 and 2002 were searched in PubMed, Embase, Cochrane Library, CINAHL, Google Scholar, DBPIA, KISS, and RISS databases. Search criteria included the mesh terms 'aromatherapy menopause women depression anxiety.' The review included randomized and nonrandomized studies of women who were menopausal or postmenopausal and received aromatherapy intervention for depression and anxiety associated with symptoms of menopause. The extracted literature was evaluated via quality appraisal checklists of ROB 2 (Risk of Bias 2.0) and ROBINS-1 (Risk Of Bias In Non-Randomized Studies - of Interventions) and visualized using a risk-of-bias visualization tool. @*Results@#The review included 6 randomized controlled studies and 2 quasi-experimental studies. The results showed that aromatherapy massage and inhalation therapy were effective in reducing depression and had beneficial effects in reducing anxiety, improving quality of sleep, and menopausal symptoms in menopausal women. @*Conclusion@#Interventions using aromatic essential oils to massage the hands, arms, back, and scalp or inhalation of aromatic oils from clothing, necklaces, and bedding might be beneficial for the emotional health of menopausal women. Women health professionals should consider applying aromatherapy to menopausal women to improve emotional health, sleep, and menopausal symptoms.

ABSTRACT

Acute pancreatitis is a sudden inflammatory disease that could be developed into a fatal condition. Traditional dogma was to rest the pancreas by fasting. However, evidence shows the benefits of early enteral feeding resulting in a shorter hospital stay, improved mortality, multi-organ failure, systemic infections, and the need for operative interventions. Clinicians should encourage enteral feeding as soon as possible even in severe acute pancreatitis if there are no contraindications. An immediate solid diet could be attempted. Regarding tube feeding, the nasojejunal tube did not show superiority to the nasogastric tube. Different formulas and probiotics need more investigation. Guidelines are against using prophylactic antibiotics, but Korean centers still report overuse of antibiotics. However, there is still a debate about using prophylactic antibiotics in severe acute pancreatitis. Broad-spectrum antibiotics should be initiated when an infection is suspected. In conclusion, enteral nutritional support and optimal use of antibiotics are the keys to the management of acute pancreatitis.

ABSTRACT

Superficial angiomyxoma (SA) is a rare, benign, cutaneous soft tissue tumor. It is composed of myxoid matrix and blood vessels. Herein, we report a case of a solitary SA on the posterior neck of a 6-year-old boy. An analysis of the biopsied specimen showed a prominent myxoid stroma with thin-walled, branching blood vessels, revealing the presence of an SA. SA especially that originating in the posterior neck, is rarely seen and should be considered as a differential diagnosis for a solitary mass in the posterior neck.

ABSTRACT

Cholangiocarcinoma is a biliary carcinoma with a wide spectrum of imaging, histological, and clinical features. In immunocompromised patients, pyogenic abscesses are relatively common and an echinococcal hepatic cysts are very rare. The authors experienced a very rare case of cholangiocarcinoma showing multiple hypodense masses with wall enhancement mimicking pyogenic liver abscess, echinococcal hepatic cyst, and cystic metastases. An 83-year-old man, complaining of fatigue and poor oral intake, presented to our outpatient clinic. Abdominal computed tomography (CT) revealed multiple, variable-sized hypodense masses with peripheral rim enhancement throughout the liver. Dynamic liver magnetic resonance images also showed findings similar to those of a CT scan. We performed ultrasound-guided biopsy of the mass which revealed cholangiocarcinoma.

ABSTRACT

Xanthogranulomatous inflammation is a rare inflammatory reaction, characterized by lipid-laden macrophages, known as xanthomas, in histopathologic examination. Aggressive xanthogranulomatous inflammation often manifests as local infiltration but does not affect distant organs unless combined with rare systemic diseases. We report a case of focal xanthogranulomatous pyelonephritis (XGP) associated with severe xanthogranulomatous cholecystitis. Focal XGP was suspected in radiologic examination that showed a cystic lesion with an infiltrative margin, which were surgically resected and confirmed in pathologic examination. To our knowledge, this is the first report of focal xanthogranulomatous pyelonephritis associated with xanthogranulomatous cholecystitis. Moreover, we found peripheral hypointensity around the cystic lesion in the T2-weighted image, probably reflecting hemorrhage and fibrosis of the xanthogranulomatous inflammation.

ABSTRACT

This is a case report of simultaneous primary leiomyosarcomas in the spine and liver. A 64-year-old woman presented to the Seoul Paik Hospital with epigastric discomfort and constipation that she had experienced for two months. A physical examination revealed severe tenderness around the thoraco-lumbar junction. Esophagogastroduodenoscopy showed an ulceroinfiltrative lesion on the gastric angle. An abdominopelvic CT scan revealed two low attenuated lesions in the S4 and S8 regions of the liver, as well as a soft tissue mass at the T10 vertebra. Percutaneous ultrasonography-guided needle biopsy of the hepatic nodules revealed a leiomyosarcoma. The tumor at the T10 vertebra was removed to avoid spinal cord compression. The histology of this tumor was compatible with that of leiomyosarcoma. The potential primary sites for leiomyosarcoma, including the lung, thyroid, breast, kidney, genitourinary organs, and gastrointestinal tract, were subsequently investigated. No detectable abnormal findings that would suggest the origin of the tumor were found. Synchronous primary leiomyosarcomas in the spine and liver are quite rare and have a poor prognosis.

ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND: The occurrence of cutaneous malignant tumors has been increasing worldwide due to changes in various environmental factors. OBJECTIVE: Our study aimed to analyze the overall tendency of clinical characteristics in single-center patients with cutaneous malignant tumors according to sex, age, duration, size, anatomic site, treatment, and concomitant diseases. METHODS: We retrospectively reviewed the medical records and clinical photographs of 319 patients diagnosed with cutaneous malignant tumors (basal cell carcinoma, squamous cell carcinoma, melanoma, lymphoma, Paget's disease, metastatic skin cancer, mycosis fungoides, angiosarcoma, dermatofibrosarcoma protuberans, Kaposi sarcoma, malignant fibrous histiocytoma, Merkel cell carcinoma) and 109 patients diagnosed with premalignant tumors (Bowen's disease) between January 2007 and January 2017. RESULTS: The average annual incidence of malignant cutaneous tumors was 2.4%. In total, 158 males (36.9%) and 270 females (63.1%) were included with a mean age of onset of 66 years. Among the malignant tumors, basal cell carcinoma (30.8%) was the most common, while the incidences of squamous cell carcinoma (18.9%), melanoma (6.3%), and lymphoma (4.4%) were also high. The predominantly involved anatomic sites were the face (67.3%), trunk (11.5%), and legs (10.9%). Most cases involved solitarily existing tumors (77.3%), and pruritus (21.7%) was the most common accompanying symptom. Among the 69.6% of patients who received treatment for their tumors, the most common method was surgical removal. No significant increase in concomitant diseases or environmental factors was detected. CONCLUSION: Our study is meaningful as an overall and recent review of various types of cutaneous malignancies that provides preliminary data for further large-scale nationwide studies.

ABSTRACT

A 49-year-old female patient suffered a suspicious scalding burn in her right hand and forearm during a seizure, and visited the clinic 16 hours after injury without appropriate initial treatment. The wound was covered with multiple bullae, was cold and pale, and the extension and flexion functions were decreased. The intrafascial pressure was measured as 19~95 mmHg (mean 46.9), confirming compartment syndrome. The pressure was improved following fasciotomy to 23~32 mmHg (mean 27); escharectomy, split thickness skin grafting and partial ostectomy was then performed, and an abdominal flap operation was conducted. The patient underwent a delayed procedure 14 days after the operation, and on the 18th day, subcutaneous fat and fascia tissues from the subcutaneous layer were removed from the skin; after sculpturing, split thickness skin grafting was performed. On the 21st day after flap separation, stump revisions were performed. The patient is currently undergoing rehabilitation; the metacarpophalangeal joint exhibits a normal range of motion, and the proximal interphalangeal joint has a range of motion of 30~45°. The abdominal flap operation was performed for soft tissue defects in the extensor tendon and bone exposure. Thus, various long-term processes were avoided, and by implementing a short operation time and low-cost surgery, relatively quick rehabilitation treatment could be initiated.

ABSTRACT

Osteopontin (OPN) is a phosphorylated glycoprotein secreted into body fluids by various cell types. OPN contains arginine-glycine-aspartate (RGD) and serine-leucine-alanine-tyrosine (SLAY) motifs that bind to several integrins and mediate a wide range of cellular processes. In the present study, the proangiogenic effects of a 20-amino-acid OPN peptide (OPNpt20) containing RGD and SLAY motifs were examined in human umbilical vein endothelial cells (HUVECs) and in a rat focal cerebral ischemia model. OPNpt20 exerted robust proangiogenic effects in HUVECs by promoting proliferation, migration and tube formation. These effects were significantly reduced in OPNpt20-RAA (RGD->RAA)-treated cells, but only slightly reduced in OPNpt20-SLAA (SLAY->SLAA)-treated cells. Interestingly, a mutant peptide without both motifs failed to induce these proangiogenic processes, indicating that the RGD motif is crucial and that SLAY also has a role. In OPNpt20-treated HUVEC cultures, AKT and ERK signaling pathways were activated, but activation of these pathways and tube formation were suppressed by anti-αvβ3 antibody, indicating that OPNpt20 stimulates angiogenesis via the αvβ3-integrin/AKT and ERK pathways. The proangiogenic function of OPNpt20 was further confirmed in a rat middle cerebral artery occlusion model. Total vessel length and vessel densities were markedly greater in OPNpt20-treated ischemic brains, accompanied by induction of proangiogenic markers. Together, these results demonstrate that the 20-amino-acid OPN peptide containing RGD and SLAY motifs exerts proangiogenic effects, wherein both motifs have important roles, and these effects appear to contribute to the neuroprotective effects of this peptide in the postischemic brain.

ABSTRACT

A supernumerary ovary is a rare gynecological anomaly, and is usually excised due to its malignant transformation potential. We report a case of a supernumerary ovary and endometriosis situated on the anterior rectosigmoid colon. When laparoscopy was conducted, a firm, 5-cm mass was discovered on the anterior rectosigmoid colon along with normal ovaries. In this case, the discovery of a supernumerary ovary implied the presence of endometriosis. It is unusual for endometriosis and a supernumerary ovary to exist simultaneously.

ABSTRACT

OBJECTIVE: This study examined the mediating role of internet addiction in the association between psychological resilience and depressive symptoms. METHODS: 837 Korean university students completed a survey with items of demographic information, Connor-Davidson Resilience Scale (CD-RISC), Internet Addiction Test (IAT), and Patient Health Questionnaire (PHQ-9) in 2015. The complex associations among psychological resilience, internet addiction, and depressive symptoms were delineated using structural equation models. RESULTS: In the most parsimonious model, the total effect and indirect effect of resilience on depressive symptoms via internet addiction, were statistically significant. The goodness of fit of the measurement model was satisfactory with fit indices, normed fit index (NFI) of 0.990, non-normed fit index (NNFI) of 0.997, comparative fit index (CFI) of 0.998, root mean square error (RMSEA) of 0.018 (90%CI=0.001–0.034); and Akaike Information Criterion (AIC) of -21.049. CONCLUSION: The association between psychological resilience and depressive symptoms was mediated by internet addiction in Korean university students. Enhancement of resilience programs could help prevent internet addiction and reduce the related depression risks.

ABSTRACT

The purpose of this study was to compare dental health status of South Korean adults, according to the control protocol of glycated hemoglobin A1c (HbA1c). From the measurements of HbA1c levels of 4,991 individuals over the age of 19 who participated in the sixth Korea National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey, the following conclusions were obtained. Glycated hemoglobin was 7.2% in the HbA1c ≥6.6 diabetic group and 5.9% in women and 8.5% in men. The ratio in the glucose non-control group was higher in the older age group, the lower average monthly household income group, and the lower education level group. Both the tissue health index and functioning teeth index indices were slightly higher in both men and women in the glucose control group. The tissue health index was higher in the younger age group, in the higher average monthly household income group, and in the higher education level group. The missing teeth (MT) index was greater among women (3.775 pieces) than among men (2.317 pieces) in the glucose non-control group. Higher age correlated with a greater number of MT, while higher income and education levels correlated with a lower number of MT. In conclusion, we will continue to provide counseling and education on oral health problems, thereby widening the awareness of the importance of oral health care and providing a variety of media and education methods related to medical and oral health that can manage diabetic patients according to the level of HbA1c It should be developed.

ABSTRACT

Frey's syndrome and infra-auricular depressed deformities are the ones of the most common complications that can occur after total parotidectomy. We report 1 case of pleomorphic adenoma occurred in the deep lobe that obtained good results from using acellular dermal matrix (ADM) after total parotidectomy. A 24-year-old man visited the hospital with oval shape mass in right mandibular angle which of 4 cm in size was found in the deep lobe of right parotid gland from Magnetic resonance imaging scanning and a pleomorphic adenoma was suspected. A total parotidectomy was performed while preserving the facial nerve. The material known as ADM were placed in the depressed part from where the mass was removed, and the site was sutured. The surgery site was healed well without any complications such as Frey's syndrome or infra-auricular depressed deformities. The pathological result was confirmed as pleomorphic adenoma. In addition to these advantages, it does not have little potential of deformation by the gravity after the surgery, and there is no restraint on circulation, which makes fabrication free and each deformation into various shapes can be described as another advantage of the reconstruction using the ADM.
